Two Recruits Commit to Thunder Badminton Program For 2019/20

The Thunder Badminton program is pleased to announce two recruits for the 2019/20 season. Top prospects Johnna Rymes and Jasleen Kaur have committed to Concordia University of Edmonton and will be a great addition to the Thunder Badminton team this fall.

Johnna Rymes

 

Johnna joins the Thunder Badminton program from John Maland High School in Devon, AB.  She is currently ranked in the top 3 provincially for her age group and is ranked 1st for doubles in Alberta and 4th nationally.  Johnna has recently joined the Royal Glenora Club as a coach for their youth badminton program. Some of Johnna's career highlights include:

  • 2019 Girls Doubles U19 Provincial champion 
  • 2019 Canada Winter games (alternate) team member 
  • 2019 Alberta Member for the Western Canada Team Championships
  • 2018 Alberta Member for the Western Canada Team Championships
  • 2018 ASAA High School Provincial Singles Silver Medal
  • 2018 Alberta Winter Games Team Gold Medal and Individual Singles Gold Medal 
  • 2017 ASAA High School Provincial Singles Gold Medal

Jasleen Kaur

 

Jasleen is a native of Viking, AB where she attended Viking High School.  She has been a quarter finalist in the 2012 and 2018 Junior Pan American Games as well as the 2015 and 2018 Canadian Junior International Championships.  Jasleen is also a 2015 U15 Girls Doubles Junior National Bronze medalist as well as a 2018 U17 Girls Singles Junior National Bronze medalist.  She has also participated in the 2015, 2016, and 2018 Western Canada Team Championships where the teams won gold, silver and gold respectively.   Some of Jasleen's career highlights include:

Alberta Schools Athletic Association:

  • 2018 ASAA High School Singles Gold Medal
  • 2017 ASAA High School Singles Gold Medal

12 Provincial Titles Total (including 3 Triple Crowns):

  • 2018 U17 Girls Singles, Girls Doubles and Mixed Doubles Provincial Champion
  • 2016 U15 Girls Singles, Girls Doubles and Mixed Doubles Provincial Champion
  • 2015 U15 Girls Doubles Provincial Champion and U15 Girls Singles Finalist
  • 2014 U12 Girls Singles, Girls Doubles and Mixed Doubles Provincial Champion
  • 2012 U12 Girls Singles and Girls Doubles Provincial Champion 

After a very successful badminton season claiming the ACAC team championship along with a CCAA mixed doubles gold medal and a men's singles silver medal, the Thunder badminton team will look to be contenders again next season. Thunder Athletics and the badminton program are excited to welcome Johnna and Jasleen!
