Johnna Rymes Honoured as 2021-22 ACAC Women’s Badminton Player of the Year

EDMONTON, AB (March 3, 2022) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Johnna Rymes of the Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder has been selected as the 2021-22 ACAC Women's Badminton Player of the Year.

Through both ACAC badminton tournaments held in 2022 so far, Rymes has cruised past the competition in the women's singles events, finishing first both times without losing a single set. Also competing in the women's doubles event, Rymes has been able to carry her momentum from the singles event. Teaming up with her partner Jasleen Kaur, Rymes has once again run the table taking first place in both events so far this season.

On Rymes winning this award, Interim Director of Athletics and Recreation, Nathaniel MacLellan, commented: "Johnna has had an outstanding season for the Thunder badminton team so far. The year off hasn't deterred her as she's stepped into a leadership role on this team. She's showing off her superior skill and competitiveness, while still being able to maintain the respect of her coaches and keep up with her academic success. She deserves all the recognition she is receiving with this award. Congratulations!"

The Devon, Alberta native is in her second year of competing in Badminton for the CUE Thunder. In her first season in 2019-20, Rymes took home the women's double gold medal at ACAC Championships while being named to the All-Conference Team. Rymes is working towards her Bachelor of Science Degree.

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2022 ACAC Badminton Championships hosted by Olds College in Olds, Alberta.
