Johnna Rymes Named ACAC Player of the Year

EDMONTON, AB (February 18, 2023) - The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce that Johnna Rymes of the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder has been selected as the 2022-23 ACAC Women’s Badminton Player of the Year. 

Through the three ACAC badminton tournaments in the 2022-23 season, Rymes has continued her dominance in ACAC play. Competing in both the women’s singles and women’s doubles events, Rymes finished first at all three ACAC tournaments in both events without losing a set. Going back to the 2021-22 season, Rymes has finished first in both the women’s singles and women’s double’s events in five straight ACAC regional badminton tournaments. 

With Rymes winning her second straight ACAC Women’s Badminton Player of the Year award, Concordia Director of Athletics and Recreation Nate MacLellan commented: “During her time here, Johnna has proudly represented Concordia and has shown just how dominate she can be on the badminton court. Her record in ACAC play and at the CCAA level speaks for itself, and her superior skill and competitiveness help her standout. Johnna has proven to be an incredible ambassador for the Thunder both on and off the court, all while maintaining her academic success. Johnna is deserving of this recognition, and on behalf of Concordia and Thunder Athletics, I want to congratulate Johnna on this accomplishment!”

The Devon, Alberta native is in her third year of competing in badminton at Concordia. After winning an ACAC gold medal in women’s doubles in 2019-20, Rymes won the ACAC silver medal and CCAA bronze medal in women’s singles in 2021-22. Rymes was also named the 2021-22 ACAC and CCAA Women’s Badminton Player of the Year.

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2023 ACAC Badminton Championship hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton in Edmonton, AB.
