Badminton Tournament #1 - Event Recap

(EDMONTON, AB) – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder hosted the first ACAC Badminton tournament of the 2023/2024 season. This tournament featured players from Concordia, SAIT, King's University (TKU), and NAIT competing for the top spots in Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

The day started with Men's and Women's Singles. Jasleen Kaur and Emma Tran (CUE), led the Women’s Singles group this afternoon and placed 1st and 2nd. Kaur took the first-place position winning straight twos to the final. Tran won her first game in two sets, and the semi-final in three sets, but Jasleen took the final match in a walkover. SAIT’s Alia Quesnelle and Astrea Borromeo rounded out the top 4 finishing in 3rd and 4th place respectively.

Women's Singles

In the Men's Singles, we saw Mahdi Ahmadi from TKU take the 1st place position winning straight two's all the way to the final game, finishing with scores ending 21-4 and 21-19 against Raphael Motel (CUE) who earned the 2nd place position. NAIT’s Anirudh Sharma and SAIT’s Sanskar Chopra completed the top 4, with Sharma finishing 3rd after a two-set victory over Chopra for Men’s Singles.

For Doubles in the afternoon, Abigail Ledda and Cecilia Wolski from the King’s Eagles took on Sylvie Bibeau and Noel Do from the NAIT Ooks in the final match. King’s claimed 1st place for Women's Doubles, scoring 21-12 and 21-12 in the final. SAIT teams took home both 3rd and 4th place, as Taylor Burton and Alia Quesnelle defeated fellow Trojans athletes Kristianna Navarro and Shaina Osorio in two sets.

In the Men's Doubles Jonathan Su and Raphael Motel from the Thunder took on Anirudh Sharma and Davis Wong from the Ooks for the final game. Concordia sealed the victory after a tight three set match, with scores of 21-10, 16-21 and 21-17. Greg Friskie and Tyson Tsen of NAIT captured 3rd place after defeating Sanskar Chopra and Owen Ching of SAIT in three sets.

To finish off the day The King's University Eagles and NAIT Ooks battled in the final game of the day for Mixed Doubles. TKU players Mahdi Ahmadi & Abigail Ledda took first place against NAIT's Davis Wong and Samantha Tran, with scores ending 21-11 and 21-15. Thunder athletes, Jonathan Ko and Jasleen Kaur captured 3rd after a three-set victory over Gurmanjot Singh and Astrea Borromeo of SAIT.

Mixed Doubles

The next badminton tournament will be hosted by SAIT on Sunday, January 21, 2024.
