Thunder Badminton & Curling Teams Return to Action
EDMONTON, AB (January 17, 2022) – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder badminton and curling teams returned to action the pact weekend for the first time in almost two years.
On Saturday, the Thunder curling teams took part in the ACAC Bonspiel #1 hosted by NAIT. In the 10 am draw, the Thunder men lost a close 4-2 game to the SAIT Trojans, while the women’s team dropped a 10-4 decision to the Augustana Vikings. Both Thunder teams returned to action in the 5 pm bonspiel. The men lost another close one, this time to the Augustana Vikings 5-4, while the women fell to the Lakeland Rustlers 11-2.
The Thunder curling teams will continue their season with the ACAC Bonspiel #2 on February 12 hosted by Red Deer Polytechnic.
The CUE Thunder badminton teams, meanwhile, began their season on Sunday as they competed in the ACAC Badminton Tournament #1 hosted by The King’s University. In the women’s singles bracket, second year athletes Johnna Rymes and Jasleen Kaur cruised through their first two matches setting up to meet each other in the final. Rymes managed to knock off her doubles partner, Kaur, in the final to finish first. Jasleen Kaur finished second, while Ellis Connelly finished 7th. In the men’s singles bracket, Brandon Morris and Salvador Robles-Gonzales dropped their first matches but were able to rally and win their next match facing off against each other in the consolation bracket. Robles-Gonzales got the best of Morris to finish in 9th, with Morris coming in 10th.
In women’s doubles, Rymes and Kaur teamed up after meeting in the women’s singles final to run the table and win the women’s doubles event. In the men’s doubles event, Brandon Morris and Johnathan Su combined to finish 6th in the event. Finally, in the mixed doubles event, Salvador Robles-Gonzales and Shaye Wiese teamed up and ultimately faced off against Thunder teammates Johnathan Su and Ellis Connelly. The Robles-Gonzales/Wiese tandem got the better of Su and Connelly to finish 5th in the event, with Su and Connelly coming in 6th.
Thunder badminton continues its schedule on February 6 with the ACAC Badminton Tournament #2 hosted by NAIT.
