Thunder Win Back to Back Curling Titles

EDMONTON, AB - FEBRUARY 28, 2019

This past weekend at the 2018-19 ACAC Curling Championships hosted by Olds College, the Thunder were able to stun the undefeated Ooks in the gold medal match to claim the ACAC Curling Championship title for a second straight year.

On day 1 of competition the Thunder were able to start off with two big wins Friday evening against the Red Deer Kings (7-4) and the Lakeland Rustlers (6-3).

The Thunder were in tough on Day 2 as they had to start their morning off against the undefeated NAIT Ooks. The Ooks handed the Thunder their first loss of the tournament (6-2) to leave them with a 2-1 record and it meant they had to play the Ooks again to determine who would have a bye to the gold medal match. The afternoon rematch between NAIT and Concordia had the same outcome however the Thunder were able to put up some offense losing the match 7-6.

Finding themselves with a 2-2 record after a tough loss to the rival Ooks, the Thunder found themselves in a position where they needed to win their semi-final match against the Rustlers to advance to the gold medal match. Skip Evan van Amsterdam does not take losing lightly, and managed to rally the Thunder and lead them to a massive 8-5 win on Saturday night. That is right, this means the Thunder have another date with the Ooks, this time the gold medal is on the line.

Coming off of a big semi-final win, the Thunder kept their momentum rolling and finally defeated the Ooks (5-3) when it mattered the most despite dropping two games earlier in the tournament. The Thunder reclaim the ACAC Curling Championship and will represent the ACAC at the CCAA Curling Championships in Fredericton, NB on March 15-19, 2019.
