Petryk named CCAA National Golf Coach of Year

OSHAWA, ON (October 19, 2022) - Larry Petryk of the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf Coach of the Year.

Petryk was honoured during the 2022 CCAA Golf National Championships, presented by PING and hosted by Durham College in Oshawa, ON

He guided the Thunder to bronze medals in both Men’s and Women’s Golf team play at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) championships. In addition, Ella Gifford of the Thunder captured the individual conference title in ACAC Women's Golf with a six-shot victory.

“Under Petryk’s leadership, Concordia has become a consistent and growing program in the ACAC,” said Jay Shewfelt, CCAA Golf Convenor. “His dedication to his student-athletes on and off the course is a key component of his coaching style which has helped lead to success on the course.”

Petryk, who is wrapping up his third season as head coach of the Thunder Golf program, is now a two-time ACAC Golf Coach of the Year.

He has been a golf professional since 1994 and has been a PGA of Canada Member since 2014. Petryk takes great pride in teaching the sport he loves to competitive students and the greater Edmonton community.

The experience Petryk brings from being a professional and his other coaching endeavors allows him to help guide the Thunder Golf program through the tough tournament grind.

Petryk competed in the NCAA Division 1 West Coast Conference, where he was selected to the NCAA All-Conference Team and received MVP recognition from the University of San Diego Golf team.

“We are extremely excited for Coach Petryk to receive this CCAA honour,” said Nate MacLellan, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Concordia. “His dedication to his athletes and helping them grow both on and off the course is evident and you’re seeing the results on the course.”

Michael Duggan of the Durham Lords (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) and Benoit Lemieux of the Boomerang d’André-Laurendeau (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec) were also nominated for the honour, which has been awarded annually since 2010.

CCAA Coach of the Year recipients receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Award Ring Supplier of the CCAA.
