Concordia Thunder Faces Tough Challenge, Falls to St. Mary's University

(EDMONTON, AB) On Friday, the Concordia Thunder faced off against St. Mary's University Lightning on the ninth annual "Make Some Noise for Mental Health" night sponsored by RBC. The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) has partnered up with the Royal Bank of Canada in the annual Make Some Noise for Mental Health campaign to promote mental health awareness and reduce the stigma associated with mental health concerns. There are 17 member institutions participating in this campaign, spread among two divisions, under one conference.

The game kicked off with both teams demonstrating their offensive prowess, resulting in a close first quarter with St. Mary's University leading 22-20. Brock Dewsbery of St. Mary's showcased exceptional shooting skills, making 10 of his 18 attempted field goals and contributing significantly to his team's early lead. Concordia, determined to turn the tide, intensified their efforts in the second quarter. However, the Lightning maintained their momentum, backed by Caleb Jipp's 3-point shooting and Johnpaul Okodua's performance on the boards.

As the game progressed, St. Mary's continued to control the tempo, showcasing a strong defensive game and efficient scoring. The Thunder fought hard, but St. Mary's ability to capitalize on their offensive opportunities and maintain a solid defence proved to be the key difference. Alex MacLean led the home team with 23 points, but St. Mary's offence, especially in the third quarter, allowed them to secure the lead. Despite the Thunder's efforts to mount a comeback in the final quarter, the Lightning held their ground, securing a victory with a final score of 102-81.

Head Coach Reagan Wood commented "Not a good effort from us tonight. Credit to STMU and their group for a well played game. Have to shake it off, refocus, and be ready for the defending National Champions tomorrow when we take on SAIT."

Concordia will return home on November 17th against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings at 8 PM, here at the Ralph King Athletic Centre. After this game, the Thunder's current record stands at 4-3.
