Thunder Find Success on Day One of ACAC Indoor Track Championships

EDMONTON, AB (March 26, 2022) – Day one of the 2022 ACAC Indoor Track Championships wrapped up from the Universiade Pavilion in Edmonton with the Red Deer (RDP) Kings/Queens and Concordia (CUE) Thunder leading the pack.

The afternoon opened up with the Women’s 3000m event, with SAIT’s Makenna Fitzgerald running away with the gold medal, finishing more than a minute ahead of everyone else. Concordia’s Taylor Chamberlain captured the silver, while Red Deer’s Justine Larson rounded out the podium to capture bronze. In the Women’s 300m event, Halle Reid of RDP took the gold, CUE’s Emma Derbyshire took the silver, and SAIT’s Kerigan Frampton won the bronze. SAIT’s Jasmin Salmon took home the gold medal in the Women’s 1000m event, while CUE’s Emma Derbyshire and Taylor Chamberlin won silver and bronze respectively. The final women’s event of day one was the 4x200m relay, where the RDP Queens captured gold, SAIT captured silver, and CUE won the bronze.

On the men’s side, CUE’s Leonard Chesoo took home the gold in the 3000m event, with RDP’s Daniel Szucs taking the silver and CUE’s Brandon Toal capturing the bronze. In the 300m event, RDP captured both the gold and silver medals, with Kevin Edmondson and Axsivier Lawrence finishing one, two. Lethbridge College’s Aden Germain grabbed the bronze. Chesoo captured his second gold of the night in the Men’s 1000m event, followed closely by RDP’s Daniel Szucs in second, and SAIT’s Keiran Marchand in third. The night finished with the Men’s 4x200m event. RDP captured the gold, the Lethbridge Kodiaks claimed the silver, and the Augustana Vikings took home the bronze.

In the overall team standings at the end of day one, Concordia currently sits in first place in the women’s event with 42 points, followed by Red Deer in second with 38 points, and SAIT in third with 36 points. On the men’s side, Red Deer is in first with 52.5 points, Concordia is in second with 35 points, and Lethbridge rounds out the top three with 27.5 points.

Day two of the 2022 ACAC Indoor Track Championship goes tomorrow (March 27) with the Women’s 600m event scheduled to begin at 11 am.
