Indoor Track Gets Started with First Grand Prix of the Season

EDMONTON, AB – The ACAC Indoor Track season kicked off this weekend as Concordia University of Edmonton hosted the first event of the Running Room Grand Prix series at the Kinsmen Sports Centre.

Starting things off was the women's 300 metre dash where Cherise Carter (RDP) crossed the line first with a time of 44.16s, followed by Cherise Carter (STMU) with a time of 44.78s and Kerigan Frampton (SAIT) clocking in at 45.81s. On the men's side, Gunnarr Gibb (LETH) would take the top spot with a time of 37.20s followed by Domenico Marchese (CUE) posting a time of 38.41s and Orin May (LETH) rounding out the top three with a time of 38.74s. In the mixed 300 meter dash wheel chair open Hunter Graves from Lethbridge College finishing with a time of 1:16.12.

The women’s 50m dash saw Cherise Carter (STMU) take the top position running at quick 7.23s, followed by Loami Rautenbach (RDP) clocking a time of 7.34s and Emma Werklund (NWP) finishing third with a time of 7.35s. In the men’s 50m dash David Adesegun (SAIT) led the group with a time of 6.11s with Gunnarr Gibb (LETH) right behind him posting a time of 6.22s and Kevin Edmondson (RDP) rounding out the top three with a time of 6.29s.

In the 600m women's event, leading the charge was Cadence Laplante (STMU) posting a time of 1:45.71 followed by Katrina Michel (LETH) and at 1:49.16 and Kerigan Frampton (SAIT) at 1:50.37. Taking the top spot in the men's event was Owen Stewart (LETH) 1:23.94 followed by a close battle between Jonah Hennig (LETH) finishing with a time of 1:31.25 and Shintaro Iwata (MHC) right behind him at 1:31.68.

Medicine Hat's Madison Scrimger had some room at the finish line in the women's 1500m event posting a time of 5:28.68 followed by Justine Larson of RDP with a time of 5:36.77 and Kate Block of Lethbridge College in third place posting a time of 5:38.65. In the men's event, it was Red Deer Polytechnic who claimed the three top spots thanks to Benjamin House (4:23.75), Benjamin Higham (4:29.51), and Jordan Coen (4:33.52).

Madison Scrimger was also able to lead the way in the women's 3000m event finishing with a time of 11:38.29. Behind her was Justine Larson (12:10.47) and Georgia Sawchuk (12:12.95) of Red Deer. In the men's long distance event it was Nathan Woyessa of SAIT easily taking the top spot with a time of 8:42.78 followed by Benjamin House (9:17.00) and Benjamin Higham (9:27.70) of Red Deer Polytechnic.

The 4x200m women's relay saw a strong performance from the Red Deer Queens team as they posted a phenomenal time of 1:54.59. Behind them was the Lethbridge College Kodiaks (2:00.27) and the St. Mary’s Lightning (2:01.17). The men's event was much closer coming down the stretch as the Kodiaks would claim top spot with a time of 1:37.82 followed by Medicine Hat College (1:39.99) and SAIT (1:40.39).

The day concluded with the 4x400m relay events. On the women's side it was RDP crossing the line first with some room showing a time of 4:30. 94 followed by the Running Room Athletic Club (4:39.22) and Lethbridge College (4:47.91). In the men's event it was the Kodiaks who led the pack by posting a time of 3:46.72 followed by the Trojans (3:49.16) and the RDP Kings (3:53.20).

The unofficial team standings on the women's side after the first event have Red Deer in first place with 83 points, Lethbridge in the second spot with 48 points, and STMU and Medicine Hat are tied in third with 36 points each. In the men's standings, the Kodiaks hold the top spot with 80 points, the Trojans are in second with 49 points, not far behind them are the RDP Kings with 46 points.

The next Grand Prix will take place on February 10th at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre hosted by Red Deer Polytechnic.
