Men's Soccer Team Wraps Up Championship Weekend in Fashion

Men's Soccer Team Wraps Up Championship Weekend in Fashion

EDMONTON, AB - Oct 29, 2018

The 2018 ACAC Men's Soccer Championship was hosted by the SAIT Trojans this past weekend in Calgary, AB where the Thunder men's soccer team had a long road to get to the championship match on Sunday afternoon.

The Thunder did not have an easy quatre final match-up against the Red Deer Kings. It was a hard fought contest between the two teams that remained scoreless until the 79th minute when Concordia's Mazin Choufi finally solved RDC's goalkeeper Jacob Hamilton to give the Thunder a 1 - 0 edge late in the game. The Thunder picked up the 1 - 0 win to advance to Saturday's semi-final against the south leading SAIT Trojans, who went undefeated (12 - 0 - 0) during the regular season.

Heading into the semi-final game as the underdog against the nations number one ranked team did not intimidate the Thunder as they knew their fate was in their own hands. Adam Ziccarelli stole the show Saturday afternoon for the Thunder. The fourth-year keeper stopped 13 shots through 120 minutes of play, and then two penalty kicks at the end of the game to lead his team to a 1-0 victory over the host SAIT Trojans. The win sends the Thunder into the three-day event's championship final Sunday afternoon.

After falling to the Ooks 10-0 in the last weekend of regular season play, the Thunder knew they were in tough once again as they were up against NAIT in the ACAC Men's Soccer Championship match Sunday afternoon. The Ooks scored two times in the first half, and added four more in the second as they dominated the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder 6-0 to win the ACAC Men's Soccer Championship.

The Thunder claimed a well deserved ACAC silver medal and should be proud of their accomplishments this season. Congratulations to Kenny Johnson and Mazin Choufi for being named ACAC Championship All-Stars for the Thunder.
