Thunder Name Hussein Shabdi as Men's Soccer Head Coach

Thunder Name Hussein Shabdi as Men's Soccer Head Coach

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 19, 2019

EDMONTON, AB – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder are excited to announce that Hussein Shabdi will be joining the Men's Soccer program as Head Coach this fall. Shabdi will take over the program after Ian Skitch left this program earlier this spring for a position in Ontario.

Coach Shabdi is a familiar face on campus as he has spent the past four years alongside Skitch as an assistant coach for the Thunder Men's Soccer Team. Prior to that, Shabdi's involvement in the sport include Head Coach for the U13 Alberta North Soccer Program (2004-2015), Technical Director for the Edmonton Xtreme FC (2003-2004), and Youth Scout for FC Dallas (2001-2003). With over 20 years' experience coaching in the Edmonton area, he is well known throughout the Alberta soccer community and is looking forward to taking on this new opportunity, saying "I have enjoyed my time here over the past four years as an assistant coach for the Thunder but I am looking forward to taking on this new challenge as Head Coach".

With training camp only a couple months away, Director of Athletics and Recreation, Joel Mrak, is confident in the future of the men's soccer program moving forward, stating "We are ecstatic to have such a well-respected member of the soccer community as Hussein lead the men's soccer program here at Concordia. He brings a wealth of experience to the table, and has familiarity to the team that should make for a seamless transition. The student-athletes are in good hands and can learn a lot from him as a former professional soccer player, longtime coach, and as one of the most humble people I know.".

Throughout Shabdi's playing career he had the opportunity to play professional and semi-professional soccer in the Netherlands before moving to Texas where he received his Bachelor of Computer Information Systems at DeVry University.

Potential student-athletes can reach out to Coach Shabdi at 780-288-3408.
