Kerrie Buchberger Named New Head Coach of Thunder Women's Volleyball

EDMONTON, AB – The Thunder Athletics Department is thrilled to announce Kerrie Buchberger as the new Head Coach of the Women’s Volleyball program. Kerrie brings a high level of knowledge to the program from her extensive playing career as well as recent development as a coach.

Kerrie’s playing career is full of experience. She played for Team Saskatchewan Volleyball from 1986-1989 where her team won gold in the 1989 Canada Games. She went on to play for the University of Regina from 1988-1991 where she was a three-time GPAC All-Star. After University, Kerrie played for Team Canada Volleyball from 1991-1998 and was a member of the 1996 Olympic team, the first Canadian women’s volleyball team to qualify for the Olympic Games. She continued her playing career in Europe playing 5 years of professional volleyball in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands.

Kerrie also brings a wealth of experience from a coaching lens. She’s currently a coach with Aspire Volleyball, a position she’s held since 2018, and is currently leading the Canadian Indigenous U20 Women’s Team as All Nations Head Coach. Buchberger has also been the head coach for the Alberta Indigenous U19 Women’s Team in 2022 and 2023.

“I’m very excited to be a part of the Concordia Thunder team,” Buchberger commented. “I’m looking forward to working with these amazing young ladies and seeing what we can accomplish in our first year together and beyond.”

Coach Buchberger will take over a women’s volleyball program who are coming off a 7-12 record last season, falling just short of the playoffs. The team is excited to build off of last year with a goal of reaching the playoffs in the 2024-25 season.
