Golf
Thunder Golf continued their stellar start to the year as the team travelled to Lynx Ridge for the second regional tournament of the year.
The women’s team was more of the same again on the weekend, taking the top four spots in the tournament with Lauryn Psutka finishing in first at +14, new comer Caroline Frey in second at +22, and Ava Stach tied with Ella Gifford in third at +23. Hayden Prins led the way for the men’s team a second tournament in a row, finishing the tournament tied for first with SAIT’s Regan Colberg at +1. Evan Couch was also a bright spot for men’s golf, ending the tournament at +11, finishing in the top 12 golfers.
Overall as a team, Women’s Golf was a +34, taking first place in the tournament with the next closest women's team being Medicine Hat College at +69. Men’s Golf held third place at +50.
Thunder Golf will be heading right into their ACAC Championship tournament this coming week, as they play at Alberta Springs for a chance at more banners. The three day championship begins Sunday September 21st and ends on Tuesday September 23rd.
Soccer
Week 2 for Thunder Soccer saw both teams start their weekend against the The King’s University Eagles on Friday September 12th and the Lakeland Rustlers on Sunday September 14th.
It was a weekend of wins for Women’s Soccer, defeating the Eagles 3-2 on Friday and the Rustlers 2-0 on Sunday. After a quick goal from Isabella Amico in the first half gave CUE the early 1-0 over King’s, the Eagles stormed back scoring two unanswered goals giving them the 2-1 lead in the second half. Late in the second half, team captain Vanessa Pietramala tied the game up in the 80th minute and Angelina Saporito put the Thunder ahead with a game winning goal in the 84th minute. Sunday’s game against Lakeland was all Concordia for the entire game. The Thunder limited the Rustlers to only two shots on goal, with Angelina Saporito and Amy Fayant each scoring a goal to seal the win. Saporito has now tied her season high in goals in only two weeks of ACAC play at 3.
Men’s Soccer had a tough second week falling to King’s 3-0 on Friday and Lakeland 3-2 on Sunday. Carlos Echeverria was a bright spot for the Thunder, scoring both of CUE’s goals over the weekend. He now leads the team in goals and points on the season.
Both soccer teams will be on the road next weekend, travelling to Fort McMurray to face the Keyano Huskies on Saturday September 20th and Sunday September 21st. Their next home game will be on September 28th, when they take on the Portage Voyageurs.
