Soccer
Thunder Soccer had their best weekend of the season with both teams playing on the road against the Lakeland Rustlers on Saturday and finishing at home vs Portage Voyageurs on Sunday.
The women’s team had their best scoring weekend of the year thus far, defeating the Rustlers 3-0 on Saturday and overwhelming the Voyageurs 9-0 on Sunday. Their 12 goals over two days bests their previous weekend high of 6 scored the weekend prior. Overall there were nine different goal scorers, with Abby Burton, Daniella Elyas, and Vanessa Pietramala each scoring two. The defence was also spectacular, allowing only 1 shot on goal the entire weekend.
For the men, it’s the first time this year that they’ve gotten two wins in one weekend, defeating the Rustlers 2-1 and the Voyageurs 3-0. Against the Rustlers, team captain Carlos Echeverria got the Thunder going with the first goal of the game 24 minutes in. Sam Viera chipped in at the 52 minute mark with another goal putting the Thunder up 2-0. Lakeland did their best to push, scoring a goal in the 74th minute, but Concordia held on for the win. Sunday vs. Portage was all CUE all game. Duke Naylor got the Thunder on the board and the team didn’t look back, with another goal from Viera and Evan Santos’ first goal of his ACAC career. Their defence was also phenomenal, allowing only one shot on goal the entire game.
Thunder Soccer look to continue their incredible weekend into their next group of games, when they travel to Lac La Biche to take on Portage on Saturday October 4th, followed by a Sunday home matchup versus Edmonton rival NAIT on October 5th.
