Thunder Defeated by Cross Town Rival MacEwan Griffins

EDMONTON, AB – The Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder (3-6-1) played host to the MacEwan University Griffins (5-4-0) on Friday night at Edmonton's Bill Hunter Arena. The Griffins would prove to be too much on this night en route to their 7-2 defeat of the Thunder.

The Griffins struck first 57 seconds into the first period with a goal from #21 Brett Njaa (assisted by Jacob Kohlhauser). The fast paced period gave both teams their chances with the Griffins capitalizing at the 18:32 mark to push their lead to 2-0 over the Thunder with a goal from #18 Nakehko Lamothe heading into the break.

The Thunder cut the Griffins lead in half 4:56 into the 2nd period with a breakaway goal from #27 Adam Wheeldon. The comeback was short lived as MacEwan was quick to answer with a three goal barrage from Lamothe, #9 Ryan Benn, and #26 Dallas Smith to lead 5-1 after two periods of play.

The Griffins continued to pour it on in the third period with 2 goals by #19 Cam Gotaas to put the game out of reach. #21 Tyler Benko would add one more goal for the Thunder (assists from Wheeldon and #37 Phill Dillon), but that is as close as the game would get with the Griffins taking home a 7-2 win.

The @BigKahunaSport Players of the Game for the MacEwan Griffins #18 Nakehko Lamothe and for the Thunder #27 Adam Wheeldon.

The Griffins will host the Thunder in the rematch Saturday evening (November 11, 2017) at 6:00 PM at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton.
