Thunder Clinch Playoff Birth at Home Against Voyageurs

EDMONTON, AB – MARCH 1, 2019

With their season on the line, the Concordia Thunder were able the clinch a playoff birth Friday night as they defeated the Portage Voyageurs 5-1 on home ice.

In the opening minutes of the first period 5th year forward #37 Phil Dillon opened scoring for the Thunder off of a great feed from #21 Tyler Benko. The remainder of the period had action on both ends of the rink where the Thunder outshot the Voyageurs 10-7 to end the period up 1-0.

The second period was at a stalemate until the 13-minute mark when #37 Phil Dillon scored his second of the night on a great breakaway goal. The Voyaguers were able to respond quickly to the Thunder goal as #27 Ryan Symington found the back of the net to cut their deficit in half. The period would end 2-1 for the Thunder.

With the playoffs in reach, you could really see the determination from the Thunder as they dominated the play in the third period out shooting Portage 18-5. #39 Romano Morrison was able to spoil the Voyageurs power play to start the period by scoring 20 seconds into the period. Thunders #26 Cory Santoro and #21 Tyler Benko were able to add to the Thunder lead to seal the win 5-1.

Between the pipes for the Thunder was #30 Tanner McCorriston who made 19 saves in tonight's win while #31 Taryn Kotchorek made 36 saves for the Voyageurs.

The ACAC players of the game were #37 Phil Dillon for Concordia and #27 Ryan Symington for Portage. Both teams will play each other tomorrow night (7:00PM) at the Bold Centre in Lac La Biche.
