Relentless Senior’s Night Battle

Relentless Senior’s Night Battle

EDMONTON, AB (February 11th, 2023) - Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder welcomed the Olds' Broncos for their final regular season game of the year. Thunder came out hot and the Broncos were ready to battle. Each set went back and forth, and the game changed directions throughout. Thunder played relentlessly, finishing the game strong in the fifth set, winning 3-2.

The first set was close to the very end. Both teams started with well-placed offense but later the blocking by the defense was the key factor on each side. Neither team had a lead bigger than four throughout, but the Thunder get the final two points, 25-23. The Thunder kept up the intensity in the second set. We saw some excellent plays and strong kills that could cut the court in half, the Broncos with a handful of fantastic blocks, but the Thunder kept the lead most of the set and won it 25-22. CUE leads two to zero. The third set had the Broncos written all over it. The Broncos brought their intensity with strong defensive blocks and good reads of the Thunder offense. Broncos are able to widen the gap late in the set with a lead of 10. Broncos win set three, 25-15. Thunder up 2-1. The fourth set was much more even, with both teams performing well in every aspect of the game, including a few miraculous saves on both sides. The Broncos bring a four-point lead late into the set and the Thunder fought back. Ultimately the Broncos won it 26-24. Tied at two each. The final set was nail-biting. The Broncos and Thunder trading points, both teams fighting hard with defense. We reach a win-by-two scenario with the Thunder having the advantage multiple times. Eventually, the Thunder win it 18-16 and finish off their final home game strong.

The One Team Sport players of the game were #4 Haiden Hurtig from the Broncos. From the Thunder, our graduating athletes #5 Wyatt Turnbull, #2 Nathan Lane, and #11 Carson Hillburn. They played their hearts out tonight and finished off the season with a boom. Congratulations on an incredible regular season team.
