Interim Tag Removed, Ohlhauser Named Men's Hockey Head Coach
EDMONTON, AB – The Thunder Athletics Department is proud to announce Rod Ohlhauser as Head Coach of the Men’s Hockey program. Ohlhauser took the reins of the program in October on an interim basis and led the Thunder to a deep playoff run this past season.
“Taking over a program mid-season is not an easy task, but Rod accepted the challenge he had in front of him and thrived. Rod is well connected throughout the hockey community and will be a great fit for our program.” Commented Directed of Athletics & Recreation, Nate MacLellan. “Rod is a strong advocate for academic success and will be a great mentor for the student-athletes. After only seeing a glimpse of his leadership style, I am looking forward to seeing where Rod takes this program moving forward.”
Coach Ohlhauser brings over 20 years of coaching experience to the program having coached at the Midget AAA, AJHL, and provincial levels with Hockey Alberta. Outside of hockey, Rod is a Controller for Hartzell Aerospace Welding.
Ohlhauser becomes the 5th Head Coach in program history and is looking forward to the opportunity, stating, "I am very excited to officially join the Thunder. After working with the players this year, I appreciate the truly special group of athletes that we have here. I believe we are all looking forward to having success with this team and building a program the institution is proud of."
This past season, the Thunder finished the regular season with a 9-14-1 record and entered the ACAC Playoffs as the 6th seed. After upsetting the #3 ranked SAIT trojans in round one, the Thunder were only one goal away from advancing to the ACAC Championships for the 2nd time in two seasons but the #1 ranked Red Deer Kings prevailed in the ACAC Semi-Final series.
